Thanks for the great question, Randy! Five to ten songs are a good number for the MUST PLAY list, not including your “soundtrack songs” (First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, cake-cutting music, etc.). If a song is considered “undanceable” (e.g., “Freebird” by Lynrd Skynrd) or difficult to dance to (Kiss From A Rose by Seal), or if I get an abundance of songs in one category (e.g. lots of slow songs), those songs get played during cocktail hour or dinner.
If the song is a particular dedication or special song (e.g., a First Dance from a friend’s wedding, or a college frat song), it gets notated, and the reason why the song is special is announced as the song is introduced.
