This is my family: me, my brother Clarence, my Dad, and my Mom.
As you all may know, my wonderful mom went to the hospital last Tuesday for a VERY NASTY infection. How nasty? If we didn’t catch it in time, this would be a eulogy instead of an update.
It started Tuesday morning. She awoke with the sweats and shivers, but she brushed it off as simply a slight reaction to the cool weather we had that morning. She had her first collapse at 10am, yet was still insistent she was fine.
After her second collapse five minutes later, I called the ambulance. I wasn’t going to take any chances with my mom’s health.
She was rushed to St. Francis/Hawaii Medical Center East, where they put her in the Intensive Care Unit. Her blood pressure on arrival was a freaky low 70/43. (To put it in perspective, recommended optimal BP is 120/80.) In addition, she had developed a strange swelling underneath her jaw.
After a battery of tests, x-rays, and CT scans, it was determined that the thing under her jaw was some sort of infection, and it had leaked into her bloodstream. This caused her blood pressure to drop and for her to become very sick.
Through her doctors’ care, medication, and her own determination, Mom fought through and eventually was stabilized enough by Friday to be transferred out of ICU and into the general patient ward. She spent a few days under observation, with several doctors examining her to make sure she was getting better in all aspects.
The infection under her jaw is subsiding, but she has an “irregularity” in one of her heart valves that may or may not be related to the infection. For now, Mom has to take antibiotics intravenously for two weeks. She will be in the hospital for a few more days. The important thing is…Mom is better.
